Paul Robeson/Mahalia Jackson Choir
Brief History of the Paul Robeson/Mahalia Jackson Choir
Link to Information:The Paul Robeson/Mahalia Jackson Choir was established in February, 1992 during Black History month at West Virginia University by the Center for Black Culture. It began as a dream of students, faculty, staff and members of the greater Morgantown community to have a structured environment in which a wide variety of programs of cultural diversity could be established for all students. The choir gives students an opportunity to be involved in a rewarding extracurricular activity.
The choir is named in honor of two extraordinary African American talents, Paul Robeson and Mahalia Jackson. Since it’s development by the Center for Black Culture, the “PRMJ Choir” has been supported by many dedicated individuals and local churches. The Paul Robeson/Mahalia Jackson Choir is well received at the University and around the state of West Virginia. In 1992 the acapella choir had eleven members, by 2000 the choir boasted more than 60 students.
If you would like more information on the history of the Paul Robeson/Mahalia Jackson Choir at WVU, or if you would like to know how to book the choir for events please contact the Center for Black Culture or Ms. Jacqueline Dooley.
This year the choir is directed by CBC Graduate Assistant Leonard Jackson
