The Martin Luther King Jr. Research Study Tour
Spring Break 2009
Saturday March 14th Friday March 20th
The WVU Center for Black Culture and Research is excited to announce the Martin Luther King Jr. Research Study Tour. This unique opportunity to travel to the American South to study the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will take place during Spring Break 2009.
Our tour is designed to not only allow participants to visit the historic sites that are associated with the accomplishments of the life of Dr. King, but also afford them the opportunity to speak with people who impacted the history of the American Civil Rights Movement.
We will begin our study in Atlanta, GA, where we will have the privilege of attending Ebenezer Baptist Church where Dr. King’s father Daddy King began his career. We will then tour The Birth home, The King Center, and finally walk the famous Sweet Auburn where we will visit the old Sanctuary, the historic Firestation, and Atlanta’s elegant Swan House.
The tour will then take us to Tuskegee University, where we will visit the Carver Museum, and the home of Booker T. Washington. Next we will travel to Montgomery, AL where one stop will be The Rosa Parks Museum, and then on to Selma AL, where we will walk the Edmund Pettus Bridge. Our next stop will be Birmingham AL, (at one time known as “Bombingham”) where we will tour several very important sites including The Sixteenth Street Baptist Church. And finally we will end our journey in Memphis TN, where we will visit the Lorraine Motel Museum where Dr. King was assassinated.
This seven day sojourn will fascinate, enlighten, and stir participants. Undoubtedly they will return to West Virginia University with a deepened understanding of who Dr. King really was, and the profound and lasting impact that he has had on all of our lives.
This is an unprecedented time for this study, as we have just witnessed the culmination of Dr. King’s dream in the election of our first African American President. And at this pivotal moment in our history, the Center for Black Culture and Research is proud to sponsor this opportunity to do intensive research on the life of this phenomenal man, who changed the world, and whose vision inspired us all to dream.
