Applications for the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship are now open. The deadline to apply is December 5 by 12:00 p.m. through WVU Engage.

mlk2025The 2025 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Recipients: Gabrielle Williams, Cheyenne Torres, Tysa James and Janelle LaBarbera.

An applicant must be a WVU full-time undergraduate student, have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher, have financial need (determined by the WVU Office of Financial Aid), and submit a completed application to include an essay, resume and two letters of recommendation. The recipient will accept the scholarship at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Unity Breakfast on January 17, 2026 at in the Mountainlair Ballrooms.

The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship is open to all students who meet the specified criteria, regardless of race, color, or national origin. 

Applicant Criteria

  • Be a full-time student
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher 
  • Have financial need (as determined by the WVU Office of Financial Aid)

A nominee must reside in West Virginia, have an established record of community involvement, and have a demonstrated record of working to fulfill the dreams and ideas of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The nominator must submit a completed nomination form to include a two-page statement of support and two additional letters of recommendation. The recipient will accept the award at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Unity Breakfast.

The awardee must be a resident of West Virginia and must have, or be making a substantial contribution in the advancement of such concerns as: civil rights, human rights, humanitarianism, social action and advocacy, civility, improving the human condition, acting as a change agent for an inclusive and equal society for all people, etc. Each year, the Martin Luther King Achievement Award Committee makes its selection based on the applications we receive at the Center for Black Culture.
